South Korea: Cheonggyecheon Stream

The Cheonggyecheon Stream is a sight to behold in between the tall commercial buildings in downtown Seoul. An 8.4 km stream that was renovated to be public recreational park, it is a not only an amazing example of good design, but also a nice place to unwind after a stressful day at the office.

When the development for the Cheonggyecheon stream began, there was strong opposition from the public because of its cost. But when the finished product was unveiled in 2005, critics were silenced as the end result  spoke for itself.

I wasn't able to take a picture, but the Cheonggyecheon stream is even more spectacular in the night time. With the different light shows happening in different parts of the stream, it's a nice place to spend time with that special someone or friends, best of all, it's free!

The water is very clear and clean. During summertime, kids play and wade at the side of the stream.

Or play with the stepping stones.

In the reconstruction of the Cheonggyecheon, glimpses of the past can still be seen which is typical since Koreans have a strong link to their history and culture. Murals of historical events in Korea have been painted on parts of the walls. In the middle of the stream, during my visit to here, there was a small underground space that housed some photos from the Korean War.

The spectacular reconstruction that was done for this stream is Korea is something that I hope we would one day be able to do for the Pasig River, here in the Philippines.

This is one of those things I wish we had in some of our major cities.

I'm with you on this. Hopefully, this will serve as an inspiration for us to reconstruct Pasig river into something like this.

@lakwatsera and Dylan - true. the good thing is, we're also doing some reconstruction for the Pasig River - it might not be on this grand scale, but it is still something :)
