Hearing and seeing it on television already gives you awe. What more to see it in real form? Considered as one of the "7 Wonders of the World" by Newsweek Magazine and "7 Wonders of Engineering" by The Discovery Channel, having it stand right in front of your very eyes was just amazing!
It used to be the tallest building in the world, standing at 1,670 feet. I wanted to see it when it still claimed that throne, but didn't had the chance at that time. It is now ranked as 2nd in the world, just next to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
The structure of Taipei 101 reflects an Asian pagoda, a bamboo stalk, and a stack of Chinese money boxes. The Asian pagoda represents a tower that links the earth and the sky. The bamboo stalk is a symbol of learning and growth. Then the Chinese money boxes is a symbol of abundance.

Baguio: Lourdes Grotto and some Strawberry Taho
One of our family traditions is to visit the Lourdes Grotto on Mirador Hill every time we're in Baguio. It's a lovely old grotto with a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes where one can light a candle and offer a quiet prayer of thanks.

Baguio: The Veranda @ BCC
Baguio during the beginning of the "ber" months is the perfect escape from the hustle of Metro Manila with its cool weather, fragrant pine trees and laid back atmosphere.
The Baguio Country Club is one of those places that has history written all over it. Besides the fact that it was established in 1905 - the old stone flooring, framed b&w pictures and wooden furnishings all come together to render that Old World feel.

LTC Pick for October: Yakimix - Once you pop, you can’t stop
We would like to acknowledge June Cruz for providing us with this Feature Blog of Yakimix. Article was provided by her and photos by Ricka Delfin.
The place was pretty quiet when we came in. We seated ourselves at the table and looked around warily. But quick nod from me and we shot out from our seats, grabbed a plate and went crazy.
And that’s only the start of the Yakimix Experience.

Starbucks Via Ready Brew
"Never be without great coffee" is the tag line for Starbucks newest offering (pause for effect) instant coffee.
For those who thought they would never see the day when Starbucks would begin going instant, well, the day's here. This is a surprising move because I have always had the impression that Starbucks prided itself in producing freshly brewed coffee. Ready Brew is marketed to be as close to a cup of freshly brewed Starbucks coffee as possible - it isn't your regular 3 in 1, it is 100% coffee, no sweeteners or creamers.

Dong Won Garden Korean Restaurant
Tucked away at the corner of Jupiter and Polaris Street is Dong Won Garden Korean restaurant. From the outside, Dong Won looks like one of those restaurants that have been around for ages; it has the look of an old house which has been transformed into a restaurant. Inside the restaurant, the ambiance and furnishing of the place has a blast from the past look - possibly from the late 80's to early 90's. But what Dong Won lacks in decor, it makes up for in food that is deliciously diverse.
Appetizers & Sidings
After we ordered, the waiter lays out almost 10 small dishes containing different appetizers and sidings. All of which are free. Yes, you read that right FREE (which might be my favorite word next to SALE). Some of the appetizers include kimchi (but of course!), sweet potatoes, spiced vegetables, salted bean sprouts - to name a few.

A Letter from a Teenage Filipino to the World
Tourists were hostages of a policeman here, Rolando Mendoza. After a few hours of the horrible crime, some of the victims were dead including the hostage-taker.
I wrote this letter not just to apologize but also to let everyone know that we Filipinos are not all like Mendoza. We are loving and good-hearted people.
For so many years, our country has been standing tall and surpassing every dilemma; be it small or big. Years ago (back when I wasn’t born yet), you have watched us fight for what we think is right. We fought for the democracy of our nation.. The EDSA revolution. But that’s just one out of many.
Second. We Filipinos have been serving other countries for our families and we treat you as our own as well. With all due respect, I thank you all for giving us the trust through the years. For helping us to become what we are now.
The Philippines is more than just a group of islands. We are a nation of strong and remarkable people. A country of beauty and love known to be hospitable and well-valued. I humbly apologize for what happened tonight. No one in this world would want something like that to happen for life should be valued.
I politely ask the attention of the world. Please do not judge and mistreat us just because of what happened tonight. I have been searching the net and found terrible things. Hong Kong advices to avoid travels here, China and HK bans Filipinos and that Philippines is the worst place to go.
I can’t blame you for what you have decided but I hope that you could understand. Our country is now in a sea of problems. And I know for sure that we helped you in a way or another. Let peace and understanding reign this time.
I know that this letter will just be trash but I wish that you would understand. On behalf of the Philippine population.. WE ARE SORRY.
As a song puts it…
“And I believe that in my life I will see an end to hopelessness, giving-up and suffering. And we all stand together this one time then no one will get left behind. Stand up for life. STAND UP FOR LOVE”Sincerely yours,
Reigno Jose Dilao

Fez at Serendra
To celebrate one of my close friends coming to visit Manila, we decided as to have a mini reunion of with my college friends. As usual, there was a dilemma on where to eat. It was a good thing that Kit suggested that we try Fez at Serendra, a place which was unfamiliar to most of us, but turned out to be just the right choice.
Fez is one of those places whose decor is reminiscent of an Irish pub (or at least my notion of it) - cozy and intimate interiors, wooden paneling and a large selection of liquor. Serving a fusion of Mediterranean food with a Moroccan twist, Fez is a great place to wind down after a hard day's work with good food and a night cap, or two.
Stan Says: Though, it felt like eating a lot of air, it tasted delicious together with the dip. And we got some of it as complimentary. Thanks to the owner of Fez.

Bohol: Chocolate Hills and Tarsiers
The Chocolate Hills is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Bohol.
To the dismay of all chocolate lovers, the chocolate hills aren't made of actual chocolate. (Aww.) They are actually formed from the uplift of coral deposits from rain water and erosion.
The total number of Chocolate Hills were counted to have reached 1,776. They are named Chocolate Hills because during the dry summer season, they are dried up and turns to color brown. I guess Chocolate Hills just sound catchier and more inviting than say, Brown Hills.
Our visit to the Chocolate Hills was super short due to the tight schedule of our trip, but we were still able to enjoy the view albeit only for a few minutes.

LTC Pick for August: Mt.Pulag - A Pilgrimage to the Ibaloi’s Heaven
We would like to acknowledge Johzen Barleta for providing us with this Feature Blog of Mt.Pulag. All photos and the article were provided by her.
The shifting veil of mist allows only glimpses of what lays ahead – a steadily inclining course lined with green grass and thriving vegetation; vague forms of companions fading in and out of sight; and silhouettes of distant pine trees pretending to be monks robed in black, joining us in our slow march. I rub my gloved hands and exhale puffs into the cold air as my mental timepiece unwinds to about twenty hours ago, when we were rushing through paved streets on our way to Park Square to purchase a pair of thermal gloves from an outdoor shop and raincoats from a Japanese store. At that time, I didn’t really grasp what those frantic preparations meant. Now I do, we are climbing the highest peak in Luzon on the cold, wet month of July.

Cebu: Skywalk at the top of Regency Hotel
The first-ever Sky Walk in the Philippines is located at the Crown Regency Hotel in Cebu. It may not be considered as a place where many tourists visit, but for thrill-seekers, this sure is something worth dropping by.
The Sky Walk is in the 37th floor of the building and it circles around the whole building. You'll be able to enjoy the 360-degree view while imagining the different possible things that may happen while walking on the edges of the building. The platform was built to hold up to 5,000 pounds and in case you accidentally fall of the building, no problem! There are multiple harnesses strapped to secure each of the walkers and guides who will walk with you 'til the end. The interval time for each Sky Walk tour is around 15 minutes.

Cebu: Lighthouse Restaurant
During our first day in Cebu, breakfast was not part of the itinerary so we had to eat our packed lunch at 9:00 in the morning. When lunch time came, we had no food anymore. We weren't able to buy food also because we were on a cruise. So when dinner time came, you can just imagine how hungry we were.
We discovered Lighthouse Restaurant by accident by asking the receptionist where we could find a good nearby seafood restaurant. This is the funny part, when we asked the receptionist from our hotel where Lighthouse Restaurant was, she told us that it was just walking distance. So we walked for a few minutes from the hotel and then there was no sign of Lighthouse anywhere. It was a good thing that we decided to ask for directions from people we passed along the way. Turns out that Lighthouse was not walking distance away, it was a taxi distance away!
I guess 3-4km is still considered as walking distance for Cebuanos.

Boracay: Lemoni Series of Fortunate Food
Pardon the title, I couldn't resist. :)
Recommended by two of our good friends, Lemoni Cafe in Boracay is a real titleholder. Heralded by the Philippine Tattler as one of the Top 10 Restaurants in the Philippines for several years, Lemoni is a definite must-try for those who find themselves in Boracay.
The cafe's sunny yellow and green interiors is perfect for its beach location and once you're seated, prepare for some really good Mediterranean food.

Itinerary: Cebu-Bohol
Our recent 3 days 2 night trip to Cebu and Bohol was very tiring, though it was really fun to see places that we once just saw in TV, but now in reality.
Cebu is one of the well known provinces in the Philippines, having a lot of small islands which include Mactan, Bantayan, Malapascua, Olango, and Camotes Island. Some of its famous destinations are Basilica Minore del Santo Nino, Fort San Pedro, Lapu Lapu Shrine, Magellan's Cross, Magellan's Shrine, and the Taoist Temple. Cebu is also known for its Sinulog Festival and Mantawi Festival.
Bohol, an island province just located in the east of Cebu, is known for its Chocolate Hills - which as formed through numerous limestones, Panglao Island - famous as a diving location and listed as one of the top ten diving spots in the world, Philippine Tarsier - considered as the second smallest primate in the world.

Boracay: Off-Season Perks
Ah Boracay, arguably the most famous beach destination in the Philippines. Well-known for its fine white sand and clear blue waters and of course, its party scene. There are plenty of things to do in Boracay from water sports (windsurfing, banana boat, fly fish, para sailing), shopping for souvenirs, getting a massage by the beach, eating out, partying or (my personal favorite) simply enjoying the beautiful beach scenery with a Jonah's fruit shake and chilling out to your choice of beach music.

LTC Pick for July: Camsur Watersports Complex
We would like to acknowledge Jerome de Jesus (aka JDJ) for providing us with this wonderful Feature Blog. All photos in this article were taken personally by him.
CamSur Watersports Complex also known more as CWC, is considered as the best wakeboarding site in the Philippines. Located in the capital of Camarines Sur, Bicol, it attracts tourist and travellers to different kinds of water sports the whole day. In line with the numerous activities, there are restaurants, spa, pool, and sports facilities that can be found inside the complex.
Our second time trip there was awesome. We are beginners in this sport and it's not that hard to be standing on the board in just few tries :p
Here are some pics to share. These were taken on an early morning.

China: The Great Wall
Considered to be one of the Wonders of the World, the Great Wall of China, was built during the 5th century BC.
This acted as a defense from attacks of swords and spears. This wall stretches from Shanhaiguan all the way to Lop Nur, from the east to west side. The view of the Great Wall from the top is spectacular. You can imagine a giant road made of stone stretching on to who knows where. Once you're at the Great Wall, you can only see part of the it because it's extremely long that you will need to go to the other stations to view the other parts.
Trivia: Did you know that you will be able to see the Great Wall of China from the moon? Yes, you actually can!

Cambodia: Wrath of Pol Pot in the Killing Fields
The most saddening yet meaningful part of our trip to Cambodia was our visit to the Killing Fields and S-21 Prison.
To give a brief historical background (geek mode!) - during 1975-1979, Pol Pol whose real name is Saloth Sar (notice how sinister his name sounds), rose to power as Prime Minister of Cambodia. This was the beginning of his implementation of his Year Zero concept wherein all culture and traditions within a society must be completely destroyed and a new revolutionary culture must replace it, starting from scratch. All history of a nation before Year Zero is irrelevant, as it will (as an ideal) be purged and replaced from the ground up. The merciless killing and harsh methods of torture led to the deaths of nearly 2 million people.
The mass graves and fields where thousands of men, women and children were brutally killed are now called the Killing Fields.

Serenitea: Healtea Drinking
In the past years, people in the Philippines started to get into the coffee craze - either iced/cold or hot. A lot of Starbucks branches quickly sprouted in different locations. Then slowly other brands followed - Seattle's Best, Coffee Bean, Gloria Jeans, Figaro, and many others.
The trend for coffee may not fade away, but tea craze may just be starting. In the inner part of Wilson Street in San Juan, there's a new store serving tea in a different style. It's name - Serenitea.
Stan says: I ordered Wintermelon Cool (left), which was black gulaman juice, just given a better sounding name. The gulaman inside was one solid whole, and it breaks when you sip it. Quite interesting - first time I saw a whole gulaman in a gulaman juice. It was easy to drink, but as I've said, it's just like any other ordinary gulaman you can buy outside.
Pam says: Customers also can dictate how much sugar should be added to their drink. I opted for the 100% sugar choice since I have a sweet tooth. Wrong choice, I should've just gotten 75% or 50%. I didn't get to taste Stan's as I am not a big fan of gulaman. The Hokkaido Milk Tea, which was for my brother, was good though. Milk teas are probably the specialty here.

Cambodia: Trees Overpower Ta Prohm Temple
One of the highlights of our Vietnam-Cambodia trip was the Ta Prohm temple. To sum it up in one word, it is breathtaking. The sight of trees overpowering this ancient temple really takes you back in time. (Just remember to ignore all the other tourists doing tourist-y things.)
Our guide Mr. Swan (We never really did get his first name, I hope it isn't Silver? haha.) did a good job of explaining how all the other temples discovered originally in Siem Riep in the same state as Ta Prohm which is overrun by huge trees. But only the Ta Prohm temple was retained in it's original state, the other temples had the trees cleared to make way for the temple structures.

Qoola in Manila!
Qoola: yogurt + fruit has opened in between Greenbelt 1 and 2 and is hard to miss because of it's cute and colorful signage and spacious location.
Pam says:
To declare that 'Qoola is my new favorite frozen yogurt place in Manila' would probably sum up how much I liked Qoola. Being a big fan of frozen yogurt that's saying a lot. I love the Qoola's yogurt which is not too sweet, not too sour.
The self-service concept is quite helpful too if you want to have full control on how much yogurt you want to eat, how many toppings you want to put on etc and they set the price by the gram. The ambiance is clean, spacious and modern so it's a nice alternative to hangout in from the usual coffee shops. Not too mention, there's free wi-fi!
Stan says:
I would agree that the self-service yogurt is a good idea. This gives you more freedom on how much yogurt you want to put in the container. You can also choose what toppings to add on top.

レッツ食べる日本!(Let's eat japanese!)
Stan says: This is the best Japanese food that I have ever tasted here in the Philippines. Authentic Japanese food at its finest in Little Tokyo! Located at Pasong Tamo street in Makati City. Even on a weekday, the restaurants inside are all full of guests. There are a lot of Japanese restos when you enter the Little Tokyo main gate.
Japanese food in the Philippines never tasted this good, until Little Tokyo appeared. Everything we ordered was no doubt very delicious. The takoyaki they served beats what you can normally get from other Japanese restaurants and fastfoods. The sukiyaki was magnificent. The ambiance inside was very Japanese. I don't know how much we ate because it was a treat by our good friends - Fred, but I'm pretty sure that the price was all worth it. Not to mention that you can also order food from other restaurants inside the Little Tokyo area. Two thumbs up for Little Tokyo.
Pam says:
Alas, I wasn't able to leave the cube this night =(
I was able to score some take-out takoyaki* though and I must admit it trumps the takoyakis sold in food stalls in the mall (You might know which stall I'm talking about.) This takoyaki was huge and actual octopus bits were included, not pieces of meat chopped up into indistinguishable little pieces.
So for some authentic takoyaki, head on over to Little Tokyo!
---
Takoyaki (たこ焼き or 蛸焼?) (literally fried or baked octopus) is a popular Japanese dumplingbatter, diced or whole baby octopus, tempura scraps (tenkasu), pickled ginger, and green onion, topped with okonomiyaki sauce, ponzu, mayonnaise, green laver (aonori), and katsuobushi (fish shavings), first popularized in Taisho-era Osaka. A Taste of Persia
A new Mid-east resto has opened in Jupiter street, Makati. Most of the people that were eating during the time were mostly foreigners. Prices ranged from 120-350 pesos for main courses, depending on what you order.
Stan says: The place was not that big but the ambiance was good. The food we ordered was just okay, but not that good when compared to other Persian restaurants. As for the prices of the food, there were cheap ones that cost around 120-200 pesos per dish, and there were also more higher ones that reached to 350 pesos. Overall, Mana-ish was just good enough for someone that is hungry.
Pam says: I'll be honest and say upfront that I was the one who suggested Mana-ish, after passing by this resto on the way to the office every morning. I was pleasantly surprised with the interiors of the place as I expected something more low-key.

Cambodia: Angkor Wat
A very stunning view! Used to be the 2nd wonder of the world. We woke up 4:30 in the morning just to catch the sunrise in Angkor Wat. The sunrise wasn't that good, but it was still worth the wait
Afternoon view of Angkor Wat from the back side, reflecting its image on the moat surrounding it. Astonishing creation by the people from ancient period. Having very defined carvings all over.
The green part on the right side is one of the small part that is under restoration.

Cambodia: Our Highly Recommended Tour Guides
During our trip in Cambodia (Phnom Penh and Siem Reap), we had very wonderful tour guides. They are Soryar (man standing 3rd from right, wearing checked shirt) and Mr.Leak (man kneeling down). The service that they provided us was very very excellent. Their price was very affordable considering the quality of service, accomodations, and transporation they arranged for us.
I highly recommend them to everyone who plans to take a vacation in Cambodia!

Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh City Accomodation
Phoenix74 hotel is where we stayed in during our first landing to Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC),Vietnam. Located in Bui Vien street, which is considered as a backpackers area. Just 10-15 mins.walk going to Ben Thanh Market (flee market).
Pros:
- very affordable for the price of USD$16 per night, with simple breakfast included
- very close to tour offices
- free wifi
Cons:
- not advisable if stay will be more than 2 nights
- no elevator from the ground floor. Elevator starts on 2nd floor only- having a heavy luggage will be very hard to carry up the stairs from 1st to 2nd floor
- the place is a bit run-down
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On our second trip back to HCMC from Cambodia, we stayed in a better hotel - Beautiful Saigon Hotel.
Location of the Beautiful Saigon Hotel is 1 min. away from Phoenix74.
Pros:
- affordable for the price of USD$29 per night, with good breakfast included
- very close to tour offices
- free wifi
- quality service
